The next on the list to be restored is my dad’s old cupboard . I have contacted the restorer ( the expensive one , who does work for Badan Warisan ). The other furniture maker does not want to restore the cupboard because the cupboard takes too much space in his small factory. Soo ( the restorer ‘s name with Badan Warisan ) kind of scornfully told me this when I showed the photos of the cupboard that , the cupboard is veneer . Veneer = plywood which is not real wood . Therefore, because the cupboard is veneer is it really worth restoring ? The cupboard is the 60’s genre of furniture. He said rather scornfully , maybe that is is my imagination because through Whatsapp messaging , one cannot really detect the tone of voice ha ha ) . However, he does know me because he has done some restoring of other pieces of furniture for me . He has agreed and will get back to me on the costing . The frontage of the cupboard , he will replace that with a piece of wood ( real wood in this case). I want him to check the hinges of the cupboard , oil the hinges if need be and spruce the cupboard up a bit .

I need to measure the cupboard in terms of width also because I want to put in the cupboard in one of the bedrooms in the house in Muar. I can use the cupboard to put bedding, linen & clothes too .

I have decided not to have furniture built-ins but use standalone pieces of furniture for the house in Muar . This is because 1) I want to restore pieces of furniture that I like ( especially if the furniture belong to my parents & family due to obvious sentimental reasons ) to be used. Am I so governed by emotions and aesthetics that I have no practical economic sense in terms of interiors ? Restoring pieces of furniture will be far costlier than buying new furniture but I am eco-conscious and a few of these pieces are timeless & have a beauty of it’s own 2) more space as built-ins take up space 3) use furniture sparingly so that I hope to create an illusion of space in the house. It is a holiday house too so does not require so much furniture as a primary residence does .

I want to restore this coffee table too so I might ask the restorer to do this too instead of the other one . As I have said , the other restorer isn’t really a restorer , he is a furniture maker as he makes one-off pieces of furniture . As my brother likes to say “bespoke ” pieces . He has a small factory in Bandar Sri Damansara where I send the chairs to but he does have a carpenter who looks like a carpenter . You know, the old , wizard-looking Chinese man ha ha ha as I spoke to this carpenter .
Need to check my calendar in terms of contacting the restorer because the furniture is at my dad’s house in PJ. Once my teaching semester starts by middle September then I will be pressed with time . Finding that I can only 2 errands in a day rather than 3 errands . Running 3 errands in a day and having an exercise session is just too rushed . Gets stressed if I am driving especially to go to appointments . I can only do these errands in the weekends when I am not at work. Getting swamped at work as well , geez.
