Siracusa & Ortigia 16 October , 2026

We had to drive the car from Masseria La Chuisa to Catania Airport to send the car . That was a 3 hr drive which was fine . Then we took a bus ( inter-bus , name of the company ) to Siracusa . The fare was €6.20  each for suppose to be 55 minutes journey . Bus was late so driver drove like a maniac !! He overtook cars in tunnels !! Geez

View from our apartment at 6th floor
Siracusa Train station from apartment is kinda next door

Got rip-off by taxi at bus station because it was such a short journey from bus station to accomodation , paid €20. However, the thought of lugging heavy  luggage and a bag full of leftover food is not appealing !

An organic market at our doorstep as told by the owner of the accomodation
Bought bread, grapes , potatoes, tomatoes , one aubergine
Ready made risotto with dried pumpkin, bought at organic market , thought we will try and cook
Ready made risotto but dried veg , looks interesting dosen’t it

Then after organic market and putting away all the food . We took a talk to Ortigia which is crossed over by a bridge as Ortigia is an island.

Walked through this nice park
Siracusa town
Liked this planter
Temple of Apollo of whatever is left. This is 2500 years old
Temple of Apollo is one of the oldest surviving doric temple in the Greek west

Siracusa ( Syracuse) was a Greek settlement  from 734BC before the Romans came in 212 BC after a siege . The word Ortigiao is a greek word meaning quail . Siracusa ( Syracuse) was also home to the Greek mathematician and inventor Archimedes who lived through this turbulent period and died during the Roman conquest . To be honest , we walked according to a written guide by the accomodation owner so we started from the Temple of Apollo to the headland of Ortigia .

Piazza Archimede where Fountain Diana is
Buildings around Piazza Archimede
Narrow streets of Ortigia
Piazza Duomo and the Cathredral
Church of Santa Lucia alla Badia

We continue with our walk to Arethusa fountain which is a freshwater spring that flows naturally just a few meters from the sea .

Papyrus plants grow here and is one of the few places that papyrus grows in Europe
Ducks
The habor and the Arethusa Fountain
Ducks and carp are permanent feature in this spring. Water is clear .
Arethusa Fountain, its quite a sight

It was a lovely day around 22c , not too hot. From Arethusa Fountain , we walked to the headland which is the end of Ortigia .

Saw a white heron at the sea
Walking along to the headland
There is a castle ( medievel fortress ) at the extreme tip of the island
Waves breaking, think there is a reef or some barrier that causes a break in the waves
Open sea
These are weeds but the yellow flowers are pretty

We sat on a bench for sometime to watch the sunset around 6.22 pm. After that, we walked back and got to the halal butcher to get some meat & chicken to cook .Had beef curry with my last packet of Bahms Kari Daging haha and salad with tomatoes yummy !

Had delicious gelato , wild fragola (strawberry) in this lovely gelaterie ( Don Peppinu, the name of the shop )
